Wordless Wednesday: First Aid Chihuahua

We organized a pet first aid class last weekend and one of the things participants had to do was practice placing an emergency dog muzzle.  If it might save my life or another doggie's life someday - I am all for it!  I will be posting more photos about the class soon!

  2. What do they use an emergency muzzle for? Not that I could ever use one with Pug, no snout and all.

    1. Hi Andrea - This is meant for a dog that has been seriously injured. When this happens, a dog may need to be muzzled in order to receive emergency aid. Helps keep the dog safe and those handling the dog safe too. At times dogs that are injured may bite in pain. The muzzle is also tied in the back in a spot which makes the dog stay more still because it resembles the spot its mother would have used for correction. You are correct in that one would not use this type of muzzle for a pug. It is done differently for dogs with your type of nose/eyes and of course, cats.

  3. What a good, patient demo-dog you are, Piranha. Our boys have all practiced emergency muzzles too. It is super important for humans and dogs to know!!!

    1. That is very cool! They had differently sized dogs used for demos which is good so that one can learn how to put it on different dogs. They said the more one practices the better one gets! WOOF!

  4. That's really great! I keep thinking to buy one for emergencies; it's great to know how to make one out of whatever resources you have available.

    1. The trainer gave us one constructed out of fleece material that she cut. It is lightweight, strong and soft and doesn't tear easily. A smaller thinner one for small dogs, and wider one for larger dogs. She told us to keep one in our car/purse/person. If one is not available, a person can use pantyhose, dog leash, strip of clothing, a belt, a sash (like for a dress) in an emergency.

  8. You're such a good doggie! At least it was red and not girlie pink, hey?

I had to wear one when I went on a bus in Mammoth a few years ago, I was not a fan, but I didn't want to get left behind, so I put up with it!

    Wags to all,

    Your pal Snoopy :)

  9. Very interesting reading through the comments, and I can see where this would definitely be useful in a situation where you have an injured dog. My husband was even bitten by his beloved chesapeake bay retriever when, as a child, he had his dog in a field the dog got caught up in a barbed wire fence. Painful for both of them.

  17. You were good to let them try that out on you. It's useful for our bipeds to know first aid, I sent mine to a class.
